Uses of Firetube Boilers

The fire is fed by coal or wood and the hot gases pass through the flue to heat the water in the shell. The steam is collected in the upper part of the shell and then taken out through a pipe. The Cornish boiler was developed by Richard Trevithick in the early 19th century.
  • Lancashire boiler: This type of boiler is similar to the Cornish boiler but has two large flues instead of one. The flues contain two fire grates where coal or wood is burnt. The hot gases from both flues pass through the shell to heat the water. The steam is collected in the upper part of the shell and then taken out through a pipe. The Lancashire boiler was developed by William Fairbairn in the mid-19th century.
  • Locomotive boiler: This type of boiler is used in locomotives and has a horizontal cylindrical shell with multiple fire tubes. The fire tubes contain the fire and the hot gases that heat the water in the shell. The steam is collected in a dome on top of the shell and then taken out through a pipe. The locomotive boiler was developed by George Stephenson in the early 19th century.
  • Scotch marine boiler: This type of boiler is used in marine vessels and has a horizontal cylindrical shell with multiple fire tubes. The Admiralty-type direct tube boiler was developed by the British Admiralty in the early 20th century.
  • Horizontal return tubular boiler: This type of boiler has a horizontal cylindrical shell with multiple fire tubes that return from one end of the shell to another. The fire tubes contain the fire and the hot gases that heat the water in the shell. The steam is collected in a dome on top of the shell and then taken out through a pipe. The horizontal return tubular boiler was developed by Nathan Read in the early 19th century.
  • Immersion fired boiler: This type of boiler has a vertical cylindrical shell with multiple fire tubes that extend from one end of the shell to another. The fire tubes contain burners that create hot gases that heat the water in the shell. The steam is collected in a dome on top of the shell and then taken out through a pipe.
